If you find that a lot of your budget seems to evaporate in your wardrobe (and I think we’ve all been there at some point or another), it’s probably time for a rethink on how you approach clothes shopping.
The target here is minimalism. A few clothes that cover all occasions with no waste.
So here are my tips to get you started:
- Start by clearing old stuff away. If you don’t wear it, it doesn’t belong in your home. Put good quality items on eBay or Craigslist, donate or dispose of everything else. It will be painful to do this the first time, but it will be worth it. You’ll feel good when you’re done, and you may even have made a few bucks from selling off stuff!
- Learn to mix and match. You want to learn to buy items if (and only if) they match other items in your wardrobe. There is no point in buying stuff that requires you to buy other items in order to wear it. This is a spending trap. Avoid it.
- Get to grips with your colors. In order to follow Rule 2 to the most benefit; you want to follow Rule 3 – learn what colors work for you and which don’t. You can get a free color analysis online. When you get your colors right, you always look younger, healthier and happier. Which is an extra win, right?
- Learn to accessorize. Make your outfits different not through color and new styles but by wearing awesome accessories. A colored scarf, an interesting broach, etc. these things can transform what you wear and they’re infinitely reusable.
This approach to clothes shopping not only saves money but it saves time.
You’ll start to find it easy to pick out what you want to wear and spend your life doing important things, rather than staring into an overstuffed closet.
